How I never learned Hebrew
Many years ago, as an undergraduate at CCNY, I dropped out of a Hebrew class I registered for. I will never forget the expressions of the instructor and the students when I walked into class. The silence was abrupt and the curiosity palpable. Surely I must’ve walked into the wrong class. Not only was I the only non-Jewish person, but I had an awkward Asian-punk look. When asked why I wanted to learn Hebrew, I said that I was interested in Biblical scholarship and had already taken Latin, and decided that I would try Hebrew over Greek. By the second week, I dropped out of the class as everyone already knew Hebrew while I was still stuck on the alphabet.
One thing that I learned is that in the Torah, Hebrew is written without vowel markings, and as a result, meaning depends significantly on vocalization and context, so translations necessarily involve interpretive decisions, made by Rabbis. Different renderings may emphasize action, agency, or moral force in distinct ways, even where the underlying Hebrew remains stable. This does not mean that Torah law changes through vowel markings alone. Legal interpretation in the Jewish tradition develops through rabbinic jurisprudence, historical reasoning, and ethical debate, not through orthography by itself. However, awareness of how vocalization structures meaning is essential for understanding how translation choices influence theological and legal reading, which is probably why non-Jews are “prohibited” from translating the Torah. So in this context, I follow the JPS (Jewish Publication Society) and rely upon both ChatGPT and Claude to consider more “literal” translations, to provide context.
I want to make clear that the Pentateuch includes twice as many references to ethical universalist strands of love, justice, intermarriage, integration, protection, moral and ethical respect than of extermination and dispossession.
So with this understanding of interpretation and context of the Hebrew verses, I have identified 151 verses that includes commands or narratives that mandate extermination, mass killing, expulsion, and dispossession. But by no means should this qualify the Torah or Jewish faith as a religion of dispossession, the Zionist literalists are no different from Christian Nationalists evoking judgment against non-believers. I want to make clear that the Pentateuch includes far more ethical universalist strands of love, justice, intermarriage, integration, protection, moral and ethical respect. In context, there are maybe twice as many verses that explicitly refer to ethical obligations towards non Israelites, verses depicting care across ethnic and geographic boundaries. I counted about 300 verses that counter the extermination and dispossession narratives.
To be clear, the Pentateuch contains about 5,800 verses in total. If around 3% of the verses promote extermination and dispossession, more than 5% of the verses extol ethical universalist themes. The other 92% is a mix of genealogy, instruction, covenant narrative and history without the extermination content. That the State of Israel happens to be led by Zionist literalists who betray the textual history of ethical universality, should provide warning as to what the US could look like if Christian Nationalists further their eschatological End-of-Times agenda.

Biblical Hebrew was originally written as a consonantal script, without vowel markings or grammatical notation. The vocalization system now printed in Hebrew Bibles was developed by the Masoretic scribes between the seventh and tenth centuries CE in order to preserve pronunciation and reading traditions that had been transmitted orally. These vowel markings and cantillation signs do not alter the consonantal text but clarify pronunciation, verbal tense and aspect, voice, syntactic relationships, and patterns of emphasis.
Included here are passages from the consonantal Hebrew Pentateuch that address extermination and land dispossession, together with English translations based on the Jewish Publication Society’s Tanakh (1985), a translation that is widely used in both academic scholarship and Jewish liturgical practice. Many readers may not realize how different these translations are from the English versions found in most Christian Old Testaments.

Genesis 12:1, 7

Exodus 34:11–16

Leviticus 18:24–28
אל תטמאו בכל אלה כי בכל אלה נטמאו הגוים אשר אני משלח מפניכם

Leviticus 20:22–24

Numbers 13:27–30

Numbers 14:8
אם חפץ בנו יהוה והביא אתנו אל הארץ הזאת ונתנה לנו ארץ אשר הוא זבת חלב ודבש
“If YHWH delights in us, then He will bring us into this land and give it to us— a land which is flowing with milk and honey.”
Numbers 21:2–3
וידר ישראל נדר ליהוה ויאמר אם נתן תתן את העם הזה בידי והחרמתי את עריהם
וישמע יהוה בקול ישראל ויתן את הכנעני ויחרם אתהם ואת עריהם ויקרא שם המקום חרמה
And Israel vowed a vow to YHWH and said, “If you surely give this people into my hand, then I will place their cities under total removal.” And YHWH listened to the voice of Israel and gave over the Canaanite, and Israel placed them and their cities under total removal; and the name of the place was called Ḥormah.
Numbers 25:16–18

And Moses was angry with the officers of the army—the commanders of thousands and the commanders of hundreds—who were coming from the forces of war. And Moses said to them: “You have kept alive every female?” “Behold, these were the ones who, by the word of Balaam, caused the sons of Israel to act unfaithfully against YHWH in the matter of Peor, and the plague happened in the community of YHWH.” “So now, kill every male among the little ones, and every woman who has known a man by lying with a male—kill her.” “But every young girl among the women who has not known lying with a male—keep live for yourselves.”
Numbers 33:50–56
וידבר יהוה אל משה בערבת מואב על ירדן ירחו לאמר
דבר אל בני ישראל ואמרת אלהם כי אתם עברים את הירדן אל ארץ כנען

YHWH spoke to Moses in the plains of Moab by the Jordan of Jericho, saying:
“Speak to the sons of Israel and say to them: When you are crossing the Jordan into the land of Canaan, you shall dispossess all the inhabitants of the land from before you, and you shall destroy all their carved images, and you shall destroy all their cast images, and you shall obliterate all their high places. And you shall dispossess the land and settle in it, for to you I have given the land to dispossess it. And you shall apportion the land by lot, according to your clans: to the larger, you shall enlarge his inheritance; to the smaller, you shall reduce his inheritance. Where the lot falls for him, there it shall be his. According to the tribes of your fathers you shall inherit. But if you do not dispossess the inhabitants of the land from before you, then those whom you leave from among them shall be as barbs in your eyes and thorns in your sides, and they shall harass you upon the land in which you dwell. And it shall be: as I planned to do to them, I will do to you.
Deuteronomy 7:1–6

For YHWH your God is bringing you into the land which you are entering to possess it, and is dispossessing many nations from before you—the Hittite, the Girgashite, the Amorite, the Canaanite, the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite—seven nations greater and stronger than you. And YHWH your God will give them before you, and you shall strike them; you shall place them under total removal. You shall not cut a covenant with them and you shall not show them favor. You shall not intermarry with them: your daughter you shall not give to his son, and his daughter you shall not take for your son. For he will turn your son away from following Me and they will serve other gods, and the anger of YHWH will burn against you, and He will destroy you swiftly. Thus you shall do to them: their altars you shall tear down, and their standing-stones you shall smash, and their sacred-poles you shall cut down, and their carved images you shall burn with fire. For you are a people set apart for YHWH your God; you has YHWH your God chosen to be His treasured people from all the peoples who are upon the face of the earth.
Deuteronomy 20:16–18
רק מערי העמים האלה אשר יהוה אלהיך נתן לך נחלה לא תחיה כל נשמה
כי החרם תחרימם החתי והאמרי הכנעני והפרזי החוי והיבוסי כאשר צוך יהוה אלהיך
למען אשר לא ילמדו אתכם לעשות ככל תועבותם אשר עשו לאלהיהם וחטאתם ליהוה אלהיכם
Only from the cities of these peoples that YHWH your God is giving to you as an inheritance, you shall not keep alive any breathing being. For you shall place them under total removal—the Hittite, the Amorite, the Canaanite, the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite—according as YHWH your God commanded you.
So that they may not teach you to do according to all their abominations which they have done for their gods, and you would sin against YHWH your God.

21 עם גדול ורב ורם כענקים וישמידם יהוה מפניהם ויירשום וישבו תחתם
22 כאשר עשה לבני עשו הישבים בשעיר אשר השמיד את החרים מפניהם וירשום וישבו תחתם עד היום הזה
23 והעוים הישבים בחצרים עד עזה כפתרים היצאים מכפתור השמידום וישבו תחתם
24 קומו סעו עברו את נחל ארנון ראה נתתי בידך את סיחן מלך חשבון האמרי ואת ארצו החל רש והתגר בו מלחמה
25 היום הזה אחל תת פחדך ויראתך על פני העמים תחת כל השמים אשר ישמעון שמעך ורגזו וחלו מפניך
26 ואשלח מלאכים ממדבר קדמות אל סיחן מלך חשבון דברי שלום לאמר
27 אעברה בארצך בדרך בדרך אלך לא אסור ימין ושמאל
28 אכל בכסף תשברני ואכלתי ומים בכסף תתן לי ושתיתי רק אעברה ברגלי
29 כאשר עשו לי בני עשו הישבים בשעיר והמואבים הישבים בער עד אשר אעבר את הירדן אל הארץ אשר יהוה אלהינו נתן לנו
30 ולא אבה סיחן מלך חשבון העבירנו בו כי הקשה יהוה אלהיך את רוחו ואמץ את לבבו למען תתו בידך כיום הזה
31 ויאמר יהוה אלי ראה החלתי תת לפניך את סיחן ואת ארצו החל רש למען רש את ארצו
32 ויצא סיחן לקראתנו הוא וכל עמו למלחמה יהצה
33 ויתנהו יהוה אלהינו לפנינו ונך אתו ואת בניו ואת כל עמו
34 ונלכד את כל עריו בעת ההוא ונחרם את כל עיר מתם והנשים והטף לא השארנו שריד
35 רק הבהמה בזזנו לנו ושלל הערים אשר לכדנו
36 מערער אשר על שפת נחל ארנון והעיר אשר בנחל ועד הגלעד לא היתה קריה אשר שגבה ממנו את הכל נתן יהוה אלהינו לפנינו
37 רק אל ארץ בני עמון לא קרבת כל יד נחל היבק וערי ההר וכל אשר צוה יהוה אלהינו
Deuteronomy 3
1 ונפן ונעל דרך הבשן ויצא עוג מלך הבשן לקראתנו הוא וכל עמו למלחמה אדרעי
2 ויאמר יהוה אלי אל תירא אתו כי בידך נתתי אתו ואת כל עמו ואת ארצו ועשית לו כאשר עשית לסיחן מלך האמרי אשר יושב בחשבון
3 ויתן יהוה אלהינו בידנו גם את עוג מלך הבשן ואת כל עמו ונכהו עד בלתי השאיר לו שריד
4 ונלכד את כל עריו בעת ההוא לא היתה קריה אשר לא לקחנו מאתם ששים עיר כל חבל ארגב ממלכת עוג בבשן
5 כל אלה ערים בצרות חומה גבהה דלתים ובריח לבד מערי הפרזי הרבה מאד
6 ונחרם אותם כאשר עשינו לסיחן מלך חשבון החרם כל עיר מתם והנשים והטף
7 וכל הבהמה ושלל הערים בזזנו לנו
8 ונקח בעת ההוא את הארץ מיד שני מלכי האמרי אשר בעבר הירדן מנחל ארנון עד הר חרמון
9 צידנים יקראו לחרמון שרניר והאמרים יקראו לו שניר
10 כל ערי המישר וכל הגלעד וכל הבשן עד סלכה ואדרעי ערי ממלכת עוג בבשן
11 כי רק עוג מלך הבשן נשאר מיתר הרפאים הנה ערשו ערש ברזל הלא הוא ברבת בני עמון תשע אמות ארכה וארבע אמות רחבה באמת איש
12 ואת הארץ הזאת ירשנו בעת ההוא מערער אשר על נחל ארנון וחצי הר הגלעד ועריו נתתי לראובני ולגדי
13 ויתר הגלעד וכל הבשן ממלכת עוג נתתי לחצי שבט המנשה כל חבל ארגב לכל הבשן ההוא יקרא ארץ רפאים
14 יאיר בן מנשה לקח את כל חבל ארגב עד גבול הגשורי והמעכתי ויקרא אתם על שמו את הבשן חות יאיר עד היום הזה
15 ולמכיר נתתי את הגלעד
16 ולראובני ולגדי נתתי מן הגלעד ועד נחל ארנון תוך הנחל וגבול עד נחל יבק גבול בני עמון
17 והערבה והירדן וגבול מכנרת ועד ים הערבה ים המלח תחת אשדות הפסגה מזרחה
18 ואצו אתכם בעת ההיא לאמר יהוה אלהיכם נתן לכם את הארץ הזאת לרשתה חלוצים תעברו לפני אחיכם בני ישראל כל בני חיל
19 רק נשיכם וטפכם ומקניכם ידעתי כי מקנה רב לכם ישבו בעריכם אשר נתתי לכם
20 עד אשר יניח יהוה את אחיכם ככם וירשו גם הם את הארץ אשר יהוה אלהיכם נתן להם בעבר הירדן ושבתם איש לירשתו אשר נתתי לכם
21 ואת יהושע צויתי בעת ההיא לאמר עיניך הראות את כל אשר עשה יהוה אלהיכם לשני המלכים האלה כן יעשה יהוה לכל הממלכות אשר אתה עבר שמה
22 לא תיראם כי יהוה אלהיכם הוא הנלחם לכם
23 ואתחנן אל יהוה בעת ההיא לאמר
24 אדני יהוה אתה החלות להראות את עבדך את גדלך ואת ידך החזקה אשר מי אל בשמים ובארץ אשר יעשה כמעשיך וכגבורתך
25 אעברה נא ואראה את הארץ הטובה אשר בעבר הירדן ההר הטוב הזה והלבנון
26 ויתעבר יהוה בי למענכם ולא שמע אלי ויאמר יהוה אלי רב לך אל תוסף דבר אלי עוד בדבר הזה
27 עלה ראש הפסגה ושא עיניך ימה וצפנה ותימנה ומזרחה וראה בעיניך כי לא תעבר את הירדן הזה
28 וצוה את יהושע וחזקהו ואמצהו כי הוא יעבר לפני העם הזה והוא ינחיל אותם את הארץ אשר תראה
29 ונשב בגיא מול בית פעור
Deuteronomy 2: 1 We turned and journeyed into the wilderness by the way of the Sea of Reeds, as YHWH spoke to me, and we circled Mount Seir many days. 2 YHWH spoke to me, saying, 3 “Enough for you of encircling this mountain; turn northward. 4 And command the people, saying: ‘You are passing through the territory of your brothers, the sons of Esau who dwell in Seir. They will fear you, so guard yourselves carefully. 5 Do not provoke them, for I will not give you any of their land, even a footstep’s breadth, because to Esau I have given Mount Seir as a possession. 6 Their territory was already given to Esau as a possession. You shall buy food and water from them with silver. 7 For YHWH your God has blessed you in all the work of your hand. He has known your walking through this great wilderness. These forty years YHWH your God has been with you; you have lacked nothing.’ 8 We crossed away from our brothers, the sons of Esau who dwell in Seir, from the way of the Arabah, from Elath and from Ezion-geber, and we turned and crossed by way of the wilderness of Moab. 9 YHWH said to me, ‘Do not harass Moab and do not make war with them, because I will not give you any of their land as an inheritance.” For Ar has been given as an inherited possession to the sons of Lot.” 10 (The Emim formerly dwelt there, a people great and many and tall like the Anakim. 11 They were also considered Rephaim like the Anakim, but the Moabites called them Emim. 12 The Horites formerly inhabited Seir, but the sons of Esau dispossessed them, destroyed them from before them, and settled in their place, as Israel did to the land of its possession which YHWH gave to them. 13 ‘Now rise, cross the Wadi Zered.’ And we crossed the Wadi Zered. 14 The days in which we walked from Kadesh-barnea until we crossed the Wadi Zered were thirty-eight years, until the whole generation of the men of war was eliminated from the midst of the camp, as YHWH swore to them. 15 The hand of YHWH was against them, until they were wiped out from the midst. 16 And it happened, when all the men of war had finished dying from among the people, 17 YHWH spoke to me, saying, 18 ‘You are crossing today the territory of Moab, Ar, 19 and you shall come near opposite the sons of Ammon; do not assault them and do not provoke them, for I will not give you any of the land of the sons of Ammon as a possession, because to the sons of Lot I have given it as a possession.’ 20 (It too is considered land of Rephaim; Rephaim formerly dwelt there, and the Ammonites call them Zamzummim, 21 a people great and many and tall like the Anakim. YHWH destroyed them from before them, and they dispossessed them and dwelt in their place, 22 as He did for the sons of Esau who dwell in Seir, when He destroyed the Horites from before them, and they dispossessed them and dwelt in their place until this day. 23 And the Avvim who dwelt in villages as far as Gaza, the Caphtorites coming out of Caphtor destroyed them and dwelt in their place.) 24 ‘Rise, set out, cross the Wadi Arnon. See, I have given into your hand Sihon king of Heshbon the Amorite and his land. Begin to dispossess; drive him out by war. 25 This day I will begin to put your dread and your fear upon the faces of the peoples under all the heavens, who will hear the report of you and tremble and writhe because of you.’ 26 I sent messengers from the wilderness of Kedemoth to Sihon king of Heshbon with words of peace, saying, 27 ‘Let me pass through your land; on the road I will go; I will not turn right or left. 28 Food for silver you shall sell me, and I will eat; and water for silver you shall give me, and I will drink; only let me pass on my feet, 29 as the sons of Esau who dwell in Seir did for me, and the Moabites who dwell in Ar, until I cross the Jordan to the land which YHWH our God is giving to us.’ 30 But Sihon king of Heshbon was not willing to let us pass through him, for YHWH your God hardened his spirit and made his heart obstinate, in order that he might be delivered into your hand for destruction. 31 YHWH said to me, ‘See, I have begun to give Sihon and his land before you; begin to dispossess, to possess his land.’ 32 Sihon came out to meet us, he and all his people, to battle at Jahaz. 33 YHWH our God handed him over, and we struck him and his sons and all his people. 34 We captured all his cities at that time, and devoted every city to destruction, men, women, and little ones; we left no survivor. 35 Only the animals we plundered for ourselves, and the spoil of the cities we had captured. 36 From Aroer, which is on the edge of the Wadi Arnon, and the city that is in the wadi, as far as Gilead, there was no city was too fortified; YHWH our God gave all to us. 37 Only to the land of the sons of Ammon you did not draw near, all the bank of the Jabbok and the cities of the hill country, and all that YHWH our God commanded.
Deuteronomy 3: 1 We turned and went up by the way of Bashan; and Og king of Bashan came out to meet us, he and all his people, for battle at Edrei. 2 YHWH said to me, ‘Do not fear him, because I have delivered him into your hand., and all his people, and his land; and you shall do to him as you did to Sihon king of the Amorite who lived in Heshbon.’ 3 YHWH our God also gave into our hands Og king of Bashan and all his people, and we struck him until no survivor remained. 4 We captured all his cities at that time; there was no city that we did not take from them—sixty cities, the whole region of Argob, the kingdom of Og in Bashan. 5 All these were fortified cities with high walls, doors, and bars, besides very many unwalled towns. 6 We devoted them to destruction as we did to Sihon king of Heshbon, devoting every city, men, women, and little ones. 7 But all the animals and the spoil of the cities we plundered for ourselves. 8 We seized the territory from the hand of the two kings of the Amorites who were across the Jordan, from the Wadi Arnon to Mount Hermon 9 (the Sidonians call Hermon Sirion, and the Amorites call it Senir), 10 all the cities of the plateau, and all Gilead, and all Bashan as far as Salecah and Edrei, cities of the kingdom of Og in Bashan. 11 For only Og king of Bashan remained the last of the Rephaim; behold, his bed was a bed of iron—is it not in Rabbah of the sons of Ammon?—nine cubits its length and four cubits its width, in a man’s cubit. 12 This land we possessed at that time: from Aroer which is by the Wadi Arnon, and half the hill country of Gilead and its cities, I gave to the Reubenites and to the Gadites. 13 And the rest of Gilead and all Bashan, the kingdom of Og, I gave to the half-tribe of Manasseh—all the region of Argob, all that Bashan, it is called the land of Rephaim. 14 Jair son of Manasseh took all the region of Argob as far as the border of the Geshurite and the Maacathite, and he called them by his name, Bashan-havvoth-Jair, to this day. 15 And to Machir I gave Gilead. 16 And to the Reubenites and the Gadites I gave from Gilead to the Wadi Arnon—the middle of the wadi as boundary—and as far as the Jabbok, the boundary of the sons of Ammon, 17 and the Arabah and the Jordan as boundary, from Chinnereth as far as the Sea of the Arabah, the Sea of Salt, under the slopes of Pisgah eastward. 18 I commanded you at that time, saying, ‘YHWH your God has given you this land to possess; you shall pass over armed before your brothers, the sons of Israel, all the men of valor. 19 Only your wives, your little ones, and your livestock—I know that you have much livestock—shall remain in your cities that I have given you, 20 until YHWH gives rest to your brothers, as to you, and they also possess the land that YHWH your God is giving to them across the Jordan; then you shall each return to his possession that I have given you.’ 21 And I commanded Joshua at that time, saying, ‘Your eyes have seen all that YHWH your God has done to these two kings; so will YHWH do to all the kingdoms to which you are crossing. 22 You shall not fear them, for YHWH your God—He is the one fighting for you.’ 23 I pleaded with YHWH at that time, saying, 24 ‘Lord YHWH, You have begun to show Your servant Your greatness and Your strong hand; for who is a god in heaven or on earth who does according to Your deeds and according to Your might? 25 Let me cross, please, and see the good land that is across the Jordan, this good hill country and Lebanon.’ 26 But YHWH was angry with me on account of you and did not listen to me, and YHWH said to me, ‘Enough for you; do not continue to speak to Me again in this matter. 27 Go up to the top of Pisgah and lift up your eyes westward, northward, southward, and eastward, and see with your eyes, for you shall not cross this Jordan. 28 Command Joshua and strengthen him and encourage him, for he shall cross before this people, and he shall cause them to inherit the land that you will see.’ 29 And we remained in the valley opposite Beth-peor.
Deuteronomy 9:4–6
אל תאמר בלבבך בהדף יהוה אלהיך אתם מלפניך לאמר בצדקתי הביאני יהוה לרשת את הארץ הזאת וברשעת הגוים האלה יהוה מורישם מפניך
לא בצדקתך ובישר לבבך אתה בא לרשת את ארצם כי ברשעת הגוים האלה יהוה אלהיך מורישם מפניך ולמען הקים את הדבר אשר נשבע יהוה לאבתיך לאברהם ליצחק וליעקב
וידעת כי לא בצדק
Do not say in your heart, when YHWH your God pushes them away from before you, saying, “Because of my righteousness YHWH has brought me to possess this land,” for because of the wickedness of these nations YHWH is dispossessing them from before you. Not by your righteousness, and not by the straightness of your heart, are you entering to possess their land, but because of the wickedness of these nations YHWH your God is dispossessing them from before you, and in order to establish the word which YHWH swore to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob. And know that not because of your righteousness is YHWH your God giving you this good land to possess it, for a stiff-necked people you are.
Deuteronomy 11:23
וְהוֹרִישׁ יְהוָה אֶת־כָּל־הַגּוֹיִם הָאֵלֶּה מִפְּנֵיכֶם וִירִשְׁתֶּם גּוֹיִם גְּדֹלִים וַעֲצֻמִים מִכֶּם
The Lord will dispossess before you all these nations: you will dispossess nations greater and more powerful than you.
Deuteronomy 18:9-12
כי אתה בא אל הארץ אשר יהוה אלהיך נתן לך לא תלמד לעשות כתועבת הגוים ההם
לא ימצא בך מעביר בנו ובתו באש קסם קסמים מעונן ומנחש ומכשף
וחבר חבר ושאל אוב וידעני ודרש אל המתים
כי תועבת יהוה כל עשה אלה ובגלל התועבות האלה יהוה אלהיך מוריש אותם מפניך
For you are entering the land which YHWH your God is giving to you; you shall not learn to do according to the abominations of those nations. There shall not be found among you one who makes his son or his daughter pass through the fire, a diviner of divinations, an observer of times, one who reads omens, or a sorcerer, or a binder of bindings, or one who inquires of a ghost, or a knower, or one who seeks to the dead. For everyone doing these things is an abomination to YHWH, and because of these abominations YHWH your God is dispossessing them from before you.
Deuteronomy 25:17–19
זכור את אשר עשה לך עמלק בדרך בצאתכם ממצרים אשר קרך בדרך ויזנב בך כל הנחשלים אחריך ואתה עיף ויגע ולא ירא אלהים והיה בהניח יהוה אלהיך לך מכל איביך מסביב בארץ אשר יהוה אלהיך נתן לך נחלה לרשתה תמחה את זכר עמלק מתחת השמים לא תשכח
Remember what Amalek did to you on the way, when you were coming out from Egypt, who encountered you on the way and struck your rear, all the stragglers behind you, when you were faint and weary, and he did not fear God. And it shall be, when YHWH your God gives you rest from all your enemies around, in the land which YHWH your God is giving you as an inheritance to possess, you shall erase the memory of Amalek from under the heavens.
