Thanks for this Arnie!

I was aware of the general issues clustered around seabed mining in the Pacific from earlier conversations with you . . . but even so, I wasn't aware of TMC.

The situation you describe isn't surprising, but it is shocking. Setting the self-serving satisfaction of moral outrage aside . . . it begs the question, what can be done?

It's really helpful to have a single actor to focus on.

It's really fitting that you close the piece with the question of what can be done.

Now the hard part . . . connecting the dots . . .

What does it look like to build from below in the specific instance of TMC and against the backdrop of waning empire, absolute power, destabilization, debt, and obstruction?

Clearly, the billionaire class can't be shamed into doing what's right through any direct means. They're hidden from our sight, insulated by legal and corporate structures, and beyond our reach.

Clearly, the current US administration can't be shamed into doing what's right because A) they're beholden to the billionaire class, and B) even if they weren't they're too far beyond shame to be swayed.

You're talking about a Canadian company using a US "law" to save itself at the expense of indigenous Pacific populations and sovereign Pacific nations.

We're in a moment that feels more fertile for change, not despite, but because of the chaos.

We have a single actor to focus on and a single forum to operate in . . .

Who is we?

What do we build?

When do we get started?
